What will I get out of my Microsoft MCSE Certification course?

Posted by hecto on April 13, 2010 under Business Software, Tips | Be the First to Comment

Well learning in general requires a lot of patience and persistence to get from A to B. MCSE certification is no different however it is certainly something to consider doing if you are thinking of taking your IT career to the next level. It certification can really give you the competitive edge that you required in your career.

Now before getting any deeper into MCSE Certification lets explain what MCSE first of all is, for those of you who may not know it. The Microsoft Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the leading certification for those professionals who analyse the business needs and invent or design a system that is based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server platform and Windows Server System. MCSE certification is appropriate for a number of different roles such as, System engineers, System analysts and Network analysts. This is one of the most widely recognised IT certifications in the industry. Having the MCSE credential under your belt would actually show different employers all over the world that you have all the necessary skills to lead an organisation in the successful design, administration and implementation of both Microsoft Windows operating system and their Server System. It is the high level of skills and knowledge that you gain via working with these complex computing environments that will really help fast track you towards a very exciting career.

The MSCE exam does vary a bit because from 2007 there have been a few small changes, now the MCSE is available for Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, a different set of exams is required for each of them. To pass MCSE 2003, you are required to pass six core design exams which include four networking exams, one client operating system, one design exam and one elective exam. On the other hand if you are a MCSE 2000 candidate then you are required to pass one less core exam (so five of them in this case), the exams include four operating system, one design and two electives. However if we compare this to the old MCSE NT 4.0 exam that does not exist anymore, a candidate had to only pass four core exams.

As good as it sounds to get MCSE certification it also costs a reasonable amount to complete, the course price generally varies on the area but it could cost up and over $5000 to complete. The cost really does vary as it all depends what you want, for example if you go to a well known institution with a very good reputation who also have teachers with a lot of expertise who are doing the training then you will probably be expected to pay more. Normally the number of people in classes is small for these types of courses due to the high complexity and insensitivity of the course. However there is no need to worry about training because there are a lot of companies and different training opportunities, there are many different companies that offer MCSE training in diverse formats. These formats include computer based training discs; web based training, instructor-led courses, training videos and so on. So if you do not feel like joining a class for whatever reason then no worries because there are plenty more options open there for you.

Expanding your small business to an international market

Posted by hecto on April 8, 2010 under Business Ideas, General Management, The Internet, Tips | Be the First to Comment

I have been thinking for some time about this and I have looked at a few small businesses that are currently doing it. Well my idea is that small businesses should use opportunities better and get their business to operate on an international scale. While it is always good to supply a certain market in a certain region I believe that some small business should look into supplying the international market. While this may not happen over night it could work if you give it a go. For example if you are selling washing machine parts in your local area why not put some of these parts online and try and sell them to people all over the world. You could try it out on eBay and slowly open your own website and build your customer base. You will be surprised to see how much interest you will get from people in other regions of your country and other foreign countries.

EBay enables people from all over the world to find your product easily. I used to sell on eBay myself and at the beginning I was only shipping most of my products to UK customers but over time this changed and I was suddenly shipping most of my products to customers in Europe and the US. But eBay prices are very competitive as there are many sellers selling similar products so it will be tough at the beginning, but even on eBay people look for service so once you have satisfied a buyer once s/he will come back to you if they need more.

Operating on a international scale does not mean having to get bigger it just means that you could get more customers. Ebay was one of the examples but the problem with Ebay it can only work with specific products and a lot of small businesses may find that the prices people sell there are the prices they buy their goods themselves. All that means is that you need to find cheaper suppliers. Another way you could serve an International market is by taking part in forums that fit your business people there are always looking for help.

There is also the option of getting your own website online to sell your goods but I would not suggest this if you don’t know what you are doing because you could end up spending a lot and not getting any results, this is why I was suggesting the cheaper methods to start with.

Should we hire a consultant?

Posted by hecto on March 31, 2010 under General Management | Be the First to Comment

This is a question that many businesses may ask at time to deal with a problem or overcome a problem that just will not go away; well in this case hiring a consultant may just be the action you may have to take. At first it may seem a bit costly to do but if you think ahead then this would actually be saving you money for the future and at the same time you get the right expertise to overcome a current obstacle in your business. Generally a good consultant will be able to come up with a solution to a problem and implement this much faster than you or any of your staff would be able to. A consultant is a professional in a particular area of expertise such as law, marketing, human resources or accountancy. So basically you would be hiring someone who really knows that particular field well and has probably dealt with many different and similar situations in the past.

When hiring a consultant you need to clear a few things up before you do so:

- You need to identify the problem and what the symptoms are, this is important as you are requiring a consultant to help you resolve an issue in a particular part of your business.

- You also need to think about what you are really expecting from a consultant and at the same time consider your organisations needs.

- It is also important to know what you expect when the consultant accomplishes their task, so think about the results or particular changes that you may want to see.

- As mentioned above consultants are professionals in a particular field so you need to know what type of consultant to contact.

- Set a time frame about when you want this task to be accomplished by.

The great possibilities with a business card

Posted by hecto on under Business Cards, Tips | Read the First Comment

Ever thought about business cards being an important marketing tool for your business? Well fact is that they are as you also probably thought so. No real business person can be in business without always having a business card ready to give out to their customers and clients. I mean you wouldn’t want to write your contact information on paper every time you meet a new person.

Problem is that most business cards only do half the marketing job, which is giving people your contact details. Think about all the times you get business cards, what do you do with them? You probably put them in a draw and never see them again for a long time, the best scenario would be if you put them in a card file, then again how many time you go through that card file. So in a way the traditional business cards are a complete waste.

Now try and think about how to turn those business cards to real marketing vehicles, well main factor is making your business card visible to people and the only way you can do that is by getting people to make use of your business cards. So first of all think about what you could print on the card to quickly remind customers about the services you offer when they look at it. It could me a pizza picture on the card if you are in the pizza business.

The good thing today is that you can get information printed on pretty much everything. You may want to print them as stickers, because once stuck they will probably not be removed for some time. What about fridge magnets, most people have magnets on fridges so why not print your business information on a fridge magnet, the best thing about this is that you can be sure it will not be just placed in a draw as most business cards are, now imagine how many times a day people will see your contact information on their fridge.

However when it comes to marketing and in particular business information you can come up with just about anything, so let your imagination take you to somewhere different. Pens, message pads and mouse pads are some of the common accessories businesses print their details on. However you could get more imaginative and think about printing a calendar and offer it to your customers.

So next time you think about business cards think a bit more. A traditional business card is not sufficient anymore so think of alternatives.

5 basic tips on starting out your business

Posted by hecto on March 30, 2009 under General Management, Starting your business | 3 Comments to Read

Starting a small business can be hard work and preparation is vital to the success of your small business. In this post there will be five tips on helping you start and run your business efficiently so that you don’t fall into any traps at the beginning.

1. Have a business plan. It is very important that you have a plan for your business, as the famous quote goes “Failure to Plan is a Plan for Failure” and this is particular true when you are starting out in business. You may have the best business idea in the world however not having a plan could mean you will ultimately lead to failure. So make a business plan work out the numbers such as the brake-even analysis, profit and loss forecast and cash flow projections. It may be that you sell a product to a large customer who will only pay you in 120 days, that’s 120 day without any cash and if you do not have a plan it could mean that you are will be out of business within the first few months.

2. Save as much money as possible before you start. Now the reason you need a really good business plan is because money is short when starting out, once you start getting paid then this problem will start to disappear up to a certain extend. So make sure you save enough money or have enough financing to overcome any problems.

3. Think big but act small. This is the key to success, if you think big it means that you plan for a successful future however it is important that when starting out you act small and try and run your business in the cheapest possible way. If you do not have money to rent big modern offices then old offices will have to do considering that they are also much cheaper and do the same job more or less. Keep the big offices in mind for when your business becomes bigger and more successful.

4. Employ people better then you. Having people who are better then you in a certain field of business means that you can learn something from them and at the same time the business can benefit from their knowledge, so always look for people with experience or who are really skilful in a certain area as they will bring your business to the next level.

5. Protect your personal assets. Ok you could do everything right but sometimes in business things just do not work out, so it is important that you are not personally liable as otherwise you could end up losing all your personal assets which you may own such as your house. What you could do to overcome this is register your business as a Limited Liability Company (Ltd), this will protect your personal assets and it will mean that if the business goes wrong you can always try again without having to lose all your personal assets.

Now these were five elementary tips that you should know before starting any small business, so keep a note of them because a lot of people miss out one of these points and end up running into trouble.

Registering the right domain for your business

Posted by hecto on March 17, 2009 under Starting your business, The Internet, Tips | Read the First Comment

Small business domain registration is not such an easy task anymore. The domain business has got a lot of competition and there are many different top level domains (TLD) such as .com, .co.uk, .net, .biz. However finding a top domain is not easy anymore as most of them have been registered years ago and buying a domain names in the aftermarket can be pretty expensive for a small business. To be honest there really is no need of buying in the aftermarket most of the time, all you have to do is be a bit creative and you can come up with a really good domain.

A domain name can help your business and at times it may be a good idea to check in the aftermarket for the right one if you feel that’s the only option left. However you can also register the best domain for you with just spending the normal fee of about $10 or €7, only because you pay so little for the domain it does not mean that it is a cheap domain, it only means that you were the first one to think of that domain. During your domain search I would recommend that you include generic words in it, for example if you are a wholesale business it may be an idea to include wholesale in your company domain, so wholesalesomething.com. Including a generic word that relates to your business will prove beneficial as the search engines will also favour you and your customer will be able to identify your business area much easier.

What Top Level Domain (TLD) should we pick?

I will touch on this a bit here as it may be a confusing with so many different TLD´s available but I will write something in more detail about it soon. The .com TLD is King of them all as it is the mostly used worldwide. However it is not necessary to have it, if you are targeting the UK market then .co.uk will do the same job, on the other hand if the .com is also available I would registering it too.

Domain Registration

Well this is the easy there are so many companies around so you have a great choice. Godaddy.com is the biggest domain register and has competitive prices, at Godaddy.com it may be wise to find discount coupons in forums and use them when buying some even offer up to 30% discount. There are also other registrars like Name.com that is a bit cheaper but it may be that you want to get web hosting with your domain so I would suggest shopping around and finding the best deal.

What do you understand with Learning Management Systems?

Posted by hecto on March 14, 2009 under Business Software | Be the First to Comment

Also known as LMS (Learning Management System) is simply a set of software applications that help manage user learning interventions; examples of these are WebCT, Blackboard, and Desire2Learn. These LMSs really help an organisation and are of great value to them because they enable information or regular content to reach their users without implications and also provide an effortless and manageable structure for administration staff to deal with.

An advantage of Learning Management system (LMS) is that they are usually accessible from any place at any time to the students them use them for learning and administration which gives them a lot of flexibility. Industries such as financial services and sectors such as universities are making great use LMS. Blackboard for example is used widely and WebCT is used widely at most British Universities, students are able to read their lecture notes and other information that is posted by their lecture before attending the actual lecture. This has meant that a lot of students can be more prepared for their lectures. Nevertheless LMSs for corporate learning have got different educational and administrative requirements to meet in comparison to educational institutions, they may share the same characteristics however an LMS for corporate learning is different as it fits that certain market with distinctive needs.

Most corporations also know that knowledge is power which is also why a large number of companies that when improving competitive advantage knowledge management is really power. Conversely it is not just the major companies who have realised this and make use of Learning Management Systems, to maintain the required competitive edge in different markets it is also smaller and medium size companies that are using LMS.

Surado Business CRM

While buying CRM (Customer Relation Management) Software can be expensive, but what can be more expensive is buying the wrong one that you may find does not do the job for your business. It may be an idea to download Surado Small Business CRM Software . This will enable you to test the software, well you will have 120 clicks then it becomes inactive and you will either have to pay for it or just not use it anymore.

One of the biggest advantages of this CRM Software is that if you are a first time user after referring to the manual a couple of times it should be pretty easy to use after that. However one of the disadvantages to the software is that if you are not used to server or desktop servers it could be difficult to install.

The support response seems to be automatic from Surado and nobody really bothers to take care of the customer. This probably is because I was using the free version but if they are not providing a good service for the free version I really wouldn’t want to try the full version. So overall the software is not bad but it lacks customer support.
